The 79th Cannes Film Festival opened with a celebration of cinematic artistry, honoring Peter Jackson while welcoming filmmakers and stars back to the Croisette.

The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival officially opened Tuesday evening at the legendary Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, once again transforming the Croisette into the center of world cinema.

Long before the ceremony began, photographers, journalists, and festivalgoers filled the famous boulevard as anticipation grew for an opening night balancing glamour, emotion, and cinematic prestige. Hosted by Eye Haïdara and broadcast live across France, the ceremony once again demonstrated Cannes’ unique ability to blend international celebrity culture with auteur-driven filmmaking in a way few global events can replicate.

Cannes once again proved why it remains the symbolic heart of world cinema.

The iconic red carpet quickly became one of the defining images of the evening as filmmakers, actors, and jury members ascended the Palais steps beneath a storm of camera flashes. Among the major arrivals were director Pierre Salvadori and the cast of the opening film La Vénus Électrique, featuring Pio Marmaï, Anaïs Demoustier, Gilles Lellouche, Gustave de Kervern, Vimala Pons, and Madeleine Baudot.

International guests, including Jane Fonda, Joan Collins, Maika Monroe, Diego Luna, and acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, reinforced the festival’s global presence from its very first night.

The emotional centerpiece of the ceremony arrived with the presentation of the Honorary Palme d’Or to Peter Jackson, whose impact on modern blockbuster filmmaking remains immeasurable decades after The Lord of the Rings trilogy redefined fantasy cinema.

Festival General Delegate Thierry Frémaux praised Jackson for permanently transforming “the language of cinematic spectacle,” while the tribute gained even greater emotional weight when Elijah Wood presented the award. Their reunion on stage instantly recalled an era when epic fantasy filmmaking reshaped audience expectations surrounding visual ambition, emotional storytelling, and large-scale world-building.

Cannes has historically been associated with arthouse and auteur filmmaking, making the festival’s embrace of Jackson especially meaningful as recognition of a filmmaker who successfully bridged mainstream entertainment with deeply personal artistic vision.

Music also played an important role during the evening as French artists Theodora and Oklou performed The Beatles’ “Get Back” in tribute to Jackson’s acclaimed documentary The Beatles: Get Back.

Earlier in the day, jury president Park Chan-wook appeared alongside fellow jury members Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Chloé Zhao, Laura Wandel, Diego Céspedes, Isaach de Bankolé, Paul Laverty, and Stellan Skarsgård, openly discussing the relationship between cinema and politics in today’s cultural climate.

Those conversations reflected broader themes already surrounding this year’s festival while reinforcing Cannes’ longstanding role as both a celebration of filmmaking and a mirror of wider artistic and social conversations impacting the entertainment industry worldwide.

Beyond the ceremony itself, opening night offered an early preview of one of the most anticipated Cannes lineups in recent memory. Conversations across the Croisette quickly centered on upcoming premieres, including Fatherland starring Sandra Hüller, Paper Tiger with Adam Driver, Miles Teller, and Scarlett Johansson, Hope featuring Michael Fassbender, Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander, Hoyeon, and Hwang Jung-Min, as well as Pedro Almodóvar’s latest feature, Amarga Navidad.

One of the most noticeable aspects of this year’s opening ceremony was the stronger emphasis placed on filmmakers and creative voices rather than purely viral celebrity culture, signaling Cannes’ continued desire to reaffirm its identity as a festival centered first and foremost on cinematic artistry.

Yet despite the evolution of the entertainment industry, the timeless spectacle of Cannes remained fully intact the moment official cars arrived in front of the Palais, and guests climbed the famous red staircase beneath the Mediterranean sky, reminding audiences why the festival continues to stand as the most symbolic stage in world cinema.
