The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping 2026 Emmy Shockers, Spider-Noir Canceled and Practical Magic 2 Wins

Hey everybody and welcome back to the channel. Izola here with FlickDirect and we've got a lot to talk about. I know it's been a couple of weeks. We had a huge heat wave in Southern California. Way too hot to really record anything. So I apologize that we are a little behind, but weekly news is back. So grab your popcorn, sit back, relax, and let's get this started.

Okay, so first up, we had the Emmys last night, 78th Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Mariska Hardigay from Law & Order SVU was the host, and it was a pretty good time. I really enjoyed it. What I thought was interesting is that she was the first female host in like 15 years, or it's been 15 years since we've had a female host, and I think she did a good job.

You know, it's nice to switch things up once in a while and, you know, nothing too crazy happened. So I guess that's a win for everybody, right? Now, there were some surprises, but a massive tidal wave for one show, Rookie Show in particular. No, not The Rookie, a new show. And that show is actually Apple TV's hit horror comedy, Widow's Bay. This show completely dominated the evening.

I mean, it took 14 Emmy Awards home. holy crap I don't think I no that's the all-time record it shattered the all-time record I mean let's be honest now the creator Katie Dippold actually took the stage and thanked Apple of course because they were the ones that quote took on this crazy creative swing and basically allowed them to do whatever they wanted and well it worked because they went home with 14 Emmys but I think that the most historic thing that happened was to Matthew Rhys.

Now he's been around a while. He's a great actor. He is actually in two shows right now or I haven't watched them. I heard they're good though. Um, but anyway, he actually is the first ever to win for two leading roles. Let me see if I can word this better. He won two lead roles, two lead role Emmys in a single night. Never been done before. So congrats to Mr.

Reese for, uh, you know, one, getting the Emmys and two, actually making a historical record. That's pretty cool. Now the first one he took was for Widow's Bay. And then we also have the beast in me, which I've seen the trailers for both of them. I just, I need to sit down and watch them. Uh, it's, it's just been, you know, with heat waves, you don't, when you don't have air conditioning, because normally you don't need it in Southern California, when you're close to the water, you don't need air conditioning.

I don't have air conditioning. I only have it in my bedroom and I don't have a TV in my bedroom. So, You know, I'm just a little behind on things for the last few weeks. Now, the record-breaking didn't stop there because now we have to talk about the HBO Max camp. Jean Smart took home her fifth consecutive Emmy and eighth overall for the final season of Hacks.

This means that she has won lead actress in a comedy for all five seasons of the show. That's pretty cool. Now moving over to the dramatic side of things, we have another repeat winner, and that is The Pit. Now I have told you guys time and time again, The Pit is such a good show. If you have not watched it, I'm assuming you can get HBO Max for 30 days and you can just binge watch the two seasons.

I highly recommend it. So good. But fair warning, it is very graphic because it is set in an ER. So if you're a little squeamish with, you know, all that stuff You've been warned. So the pit took home outstanding Drama series and Noah Wiley obviously took the lead after I mean were we surprised he did such a great job in this everybody did not to take away from anybody but it does make sense and so I'm really glad that it's making waves and that we don't have to worry about the the little court case that was going on.

If you don't know about that, go look it up. It was a whole thing, but apparently things got worked out in the end. And then we also had a winner for, on the limited side, FX's DTF St. Louis, and that actually snagged Outstanding Limited or Anthology series. That's another one I have to check out. There's just so many shows I can't keep up anymore.

Okay, so now we're going to shift gears from the small screen to the big screen, and this weekend's box office has crowned a new queen, or rather, a pair of witches. Can you take a guess? You think the spooky girl knows? She absolutely does, and was so stoked about this, have been waiting for it for a very long time. Just, you know, I love it, and I'm so excited.

You know I am talking about Warner Brothers highly anticipated sequel, Practical Magic 2. Completely just cast a spell on the audience and I'm going to see it this weekend so I'm very excited. I told you I'm excited. That's my favorite word because I mean giddy, filled with joy. I'm just so happy to see Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock back on the big screen as my two favorite Witchies.

Now it debuted at a magical number of 30 million dollars, which means it sadly had to dethrone Spider-Man Brand New Day, but it's been up there for a while, so I think they'll be okay with it. A little bit. I mean, they're doing okay for themselves. They've made, what, 935 million domestic, I think it's okay. You know, for the spooky girls, take 30 mil.

It's fine. Now we also have some shocking television to movie news. And it's left some superhero fans a little bitter, maybe. No, I'd probably say they're reeling at this point. Amazon has officially canceled Spider Noir, which I think was a little too quick of a move to do, but you know, maybe they just didn't think it was getting the grab that they wanted for one season.

I still think it's too soon to cancel. I think they should have done a second season, but maybe it just cost too much. And they thought that it wasn't worth it. I think why this is so strange is that it had a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And now I don't go solely on that, but that's still pretty darn good. It's gotten great reviews. And then they also picked up 11 Emmy nominations.

And then you just go and cancel the show. Obviously people like this. It's like, Why cancel? I don't know. They have their own reasons. Who knows? But maybe they'll change their minds. I don't know. I mean, I get it. They probably did spend a lot of money. Money that they really didn't want to because they had to film it entirely twice, right? So you're getting the black and white and white cuts.

I don't know. I really feel like you could just do the second season a different way, but hey, it's, the final say comes from high above. So even if you can make a really good point on why it should keep going, they'll still shut it down. But where one thing ends, another begins. And first up, we actually do have focus features unleashing an official full trailer for The Uprising.

And that is actually a gripping thriller with Andrew Garfield. Love Andrew Garfield. So I'm really excited to see that one. The trailer is actually really good. So I will definitely be watching that one. Just to give kind of like a little synopsis of the trailer, I guess. Garfield is a citizen where he's stuck in this domestic rebellion suddenly. Obviously he didn't ask for it.

And this trailer just feels so realistic that I really am looking forward to seeing what they can bring with this. It's definitely something that has been on my radar and that trailer sold it for me. So really looking forward to it. I'll definitely let you guys know once I actually watch it when it's available. And we won't have to wait long because that's September 18th.

It's right around the corner. And then not to be outdone, Netflix is actually giving us a first full look at animals. And this is a psychological thriller written and starring Ben Affleck. I have not heard much about this one, but I'm all down for a psychological thriller. They just intrigued me. And this one takes place in LA. He's a mayoral candidate.

His son gets kidnapped during one of the major campaign funding, you know, so that obviously forces him into just a ton of political corruption. And, you know, it's, they're always fun. Whodunit, you know, you just want to figure it out before the movie actually ends and stuff. So I'm looking forward to this one. And, you know, the critics are already saying that this is pretty good effort since, what, Argo?

And I liked Argo. So if you haven't seen that one, I'd probably watch that as well. Definitely intense. Animals is set to be released next month on Netflix. And finally, let me tell you what you should be adding to your watch list for this weekend. end. We have Zach Prager's highly anticipated practical events-driven horror movie, Resident Evil. Now, you guys may know I'm a big Resident Evil fan.

Not quite sure how I'm feeling about this one. The trailer looked fun. I'll still go and see it, but if they did this right and just kind of based it on the lore it could be okay I can deal with that but if not look I've played all the games well I'm one behind but I've played almost all the games and um yeah don't don't do us dirty please please be good I will watch it and let you guys know if it's worth your time I'll be fair I promise and then if you just want to home, we actually have on Apple TV, the sixth season of the thriller Slow Horses is coming.

I just watched the trailer for it. I'm like, I really need to watch the show. It looks so good. I don't know why it's taken me this long, but I'm definitely going to watch that one as well. I can at least binge watch it, right? And then get caught up to the sixth season, but oh God, it's going to be a lot. But yeah, that show just looks amazing. So are you guys excited for anything?
