Twenty-four years before Katniss Everdeen enters the arena, eighteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy awakens on the morning of the reaping hoping only to spend his birthday with Lenore Dove Baird, the girl he loves. Instead, his name is called for the 50th Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell, a brutal anniversary spectacle in which the Capitol doubles the number of tributes and sends 48 young people into the arena.
