Young Haymitch Abernathy Enters the Deadliest Hunger Games Yet

The new trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes audiences back to Panem for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Joseph Zada stars as a young Haymitch Abernathy, who is torn from District 12 and thrown into an arena where twice the usual number of tributes must fight for survival.

Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping also stars Mckenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close, Maya Hawke, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. The prequel reveals the Games that shaped Haymitch decades before Katniss Everdeen entered the arena and arrives exclusively in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.

ABOUT THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING

Twenty-four years before Katniss Everdeen enters the arena, eighteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy awakens on the morning of the reaping hoping only to spend his birthday with Lenore Dove Baird, the girl he loves. Instead, his name is called for the 50th Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell, a brutal anniversary spectacle in which the Capitol doubles the number of tributes and sends 48 young people into the arena. Torn from District 12 alongside Maysilee Donner, Wyatt Callow, and Louella McCoy, Haymitch is forced into a competition designed to make survival nearly impossible.

As the Games begin, Haymitch discovers that staying alive will require more than strength, and his refusal to submit quietly brings him into conflict with the forces controlling Panem. Every alliance, sacrifice, and act of defiance pushes the young tribute toward the man he will eventually become, while revealing how resistance against the Capitol was taking shape long before Katniss Everdeen ever raised a bow. Directed by Francis Lawrence and adapted from Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping returns to Panem for the story behind the Games that changed Haymitch Abernathy forever.
