Hey everybody and welcome back to the channel. Izola here with FlickDirect. Things are a little different. I know this week because I am actually traveling but I needed to make sure that I got you guys the information on the 4k UHD release of One Night Only. We've got a lot to discuss so grab your popcorn, sit back, relax and let's get this started.

So this movie is set in a satirical slightly dystopian alternate America. The premise is quite simple. Premarital sex is actually outlawed by the government 364 days out of the year. That means on the 365th day, you have a 12 hour gate or window opening to, you know, have some fun. All gates are open. You can do whatever you want. So yeah. We follow Owen, this hopeless romantic and a pizza cook whose plan to propose falls apart.

And then we have Allie, who is this stage frightened singer. And she's just looking for actual human contact. So maybe this should be a very easy thing for the two of them. But you know, not everything is simple. The fates are doing what they can to get these two together, and of course that means disasters, chaos, you name it, it's all going to happen.

There is a fake wild movie shot, they're looking for hiding and protection, and eventually they start kind of growing to have feelings for each other. I mean, spending that much time together, you could see that potentially happening. Now what worked in this? The acting. You have Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner and they actually are amazing together.

I really think that this was good chemistry. They work well together on the screen. You can tell that they just at least genuinely like each other so it really works for their characters and what they're trying to do. There's actually a lot of charm between the two of them. And then also, let's not forget, the movie is actually funnier than I expected.

Like, there were some really good jokes that landed really well. So you'll be happy to know that. So it's not just this movie about everybody who's not married trying to get together and have a good old time one day out of the year. Now let's talk about what didn't work. The world building is pretty thin. I mean, let's be honest. Like, when you're starting to think about how this all happened, why they have the mandate, why the government is so adamant about outlawing things, you know, it, it just kind of wobbles and, and is a little thin, like I said.

So I think we probably could have done a better job coming up with this big reason why, you know, just to make it more interesting, but you know, whatever, this is a comedy rom-com kind of thing. So, you know, you get what you get. And then you have some of the subplots, which I thought were almost kind of stretched to the extreme to kind of fill in the night.

Because obviously you can't just follow the two of them for 12 hours while they're trying to do their thing. You still have the subplots as well. And I think I just would have liked to have a little more. And because of all of this, I'm giving the actual movie a three and a half out of five. Okay, and now we're going to talk about the video because, you know, we have to discuss these things and see if it's worth it.

This is actually coming to you, like I said, in 4K UHD. We are getting the HDR10 presentation. And, you know, this works for this movie. So the visuals overall are really nice. You've got the New York City, and who doesn't love that? The pizza shop that Callum's character works in is actually lit up really nicely. You just get that city vibe and it's really cool.

And then there's also these red and green bio sensors, I believe they are, that they wear. And those actually pop out so you know who can and cannot do what and what. Yeah. So I don't want to give too much away because I feel like if you haven't watched the movie, I don't want to spoil anything. But they do have to wear sensors. There's a lot, like I said, the dystopian whole thing about why this is the way it is.

Eh, could be better. But you get some ideas following characters as to why things are happening. And, you know, having the sensors that light up and things like that, it just helps to kind of know who's what and what's going on. Black levels give the deep shadow detail. Skin tones are great. Older people actually look like they're supposed to be older.

They're not completely glowed or retouched or wrinkles are not removed. Teeth look like normal colors. So, and I love that. I feel like it should make sense. You can't have everybody looking like they're 18 when they're supposed to be 50 or 60. Look, we all have a little bit of texture. So give me the texture. The sets are all nicely made and they show up really crisp and clean.

unless they're not supposed to be but again everything works in that particular area. Now let's talk about what didn't work. So because this movie all starts in the evening with the 12 hours the backgrounds get blurred and a little murky so unfortunately they just don't hold up the way that they should. It's not as crisp and clear as we're normally used to so you know that kind of annoyed me but I also get it you know it's like you're filming on the HDR10 sometimes things don't come in as clear and it's usually the wider shots so but again this is all shot at night so even though you have the black levels being pretty crisp in certain areas for contrast and everything backgrounds do get a little muddled and then in some low lights you might see some extra fine tuning of faces, which was unnecessary, but it's not a lot.

Because of all of this, I'm giving the video a four out of five. And now onto the audio. And we have, once again, a Dolby Atmos track. And you know how much I love Dolby Atmos tracks because they usually, 99.9% of the time, give you excellent sound, especially with the surround sound. But again, remember, if you don't have surround sound, it's not going to kill the movie.

Okay. So just Just an FYI. So as I said, this movie is really chaotic. So that means the soundstage is completely active. You've got noises coming every which way at you. So be prepared. It is very lively. There are a lot of people. There are a lot of things going on. So let me just tell you, your ears are going to be having to pay a lot of attention.

Dialogue is crisp and clean. You can hear the hustle and the bustles. You can hear whispers. Everything is just really well done. And when Allie has to face her fears and finally sing, you know what? It's nice and warm and inviting. And again, you just feel like you're there in New York City following these two crazy kids around as they try to get their one night only in.

So what didn't work? Well, I mean, look, this isn't an action packed movie. So the low-end LFE doesn't really get used, and it's fairly restrained. And if you were hoping for a lot of bass, you're not going to get it. Everything is front end. So yeah, sorry, not a lot of bass, if any. So I mean, it's there, but yeah, you're just not going to get it.

Because of all of this, I am giving the audio for the 4K UHD release of One Night Only a 4 out of 5. Okay, and now we are on to the extras. And you know I don't give this a review. I mean, I'm going to tell you my thoughts, but it does not get a grade or a rating. So I do have to say this one has some of the things that I normally complain the other ones don't have.

So you get a featurette. You get bloopers. And you know how much I'm always complaining about how I don't get my bloopers. So that was very exciting. and they also have deleted and extended scenes. So kudos to them for giving us the stuff that I always want. Now it may not be a lot, but it's still something. And yes, I understand this is a rom-com, but I still want the bloopers and the deleted scenes.

Okay. I'm just saying more bloopers. Again, no score, but I would definitely say that the extras are definitely worth it. So if you like this movie and you want to purchase it, you will be happy. Okay, so my overall thoughts on this is that One Night Only just kind of takes this odd dystopian weird type of situation and just makes it fun and entertaining.

Now, are there issues with the plot or how we got to this type of future? Yeah, just a little. But at the end of the day, it's still a fun movie to watch. You're still getting pretty good audio quality and the video, nothing to complain about, you know, in detail. There's still some things, obviously, like I said, that could be changed. But overall, everything just works.

And you're not going to get some of the things like the extra bass and stuff because this is not a huge action-packed movie so it's kind of unnecessary. Do I think there could be some changes that would have helped the sound and audio? Of course. I mean the video? Of course. It's just the way it is. There's always going to be something and this one just kind of suffered a little more than others so that's why I took a point off.

Didn't ruin the movie at all. It's just I think that it could have been a little better. Overall I'm just going to give the 4k UHD release of One Night Only, like a 3.75 out of 5. Again, good quality, could have some improvements, but still fun to watch. And if you are a fan of these types of rom-coms, you're definitely going to enjoy it. It's going to be great in the library.

So go ahead and get it. Enjoy it. You'll watch it again. I'm sure there's stuff that I missed too. So maybe I should go back and watch it. I don't know. Maybe I will. But again, funny, witty, cute, great chemistry with the actors. So what do you got to lose? Now, if you want to go and purchase this, you are in luck. Unfortunately, I have been traveling, so I did not get to get this sooner.

So it's already out. Get online, go to your local store, go buy it, enjoy it. And if you watch it, let me know what you think in the comments, because I'm really curious to see if this is something that you thought was funny. Did I get my rating right? Who knows? You know, I won't know until I hear from you guys. So please leave a comment below. And with that, this concludes my review of the 4K UHD release of One Night Only.

ABOUT ONE NIGHT ONLY

From Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind Anyone but You and Easy A, comes a fresh romantic comedy set in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City where one night each year, single people are legally allowed to have sex. While most embrace the holiday as an excuse for casual encounters, recently dumped Owen and hopeless romantic Allie are searching for something more meaningful.

After an unexpected meeting sparks an instant connection, a series of comic detours, misunderstandings, and chance encounters continually pull them apart as they race across the city. As dawn approaches, both begin to realize that the person they’ve been searching for all along may have been right in front of them, proving that love can be found on even the least romantic night of the year.
