"The Hunger Games" opened this past weekend with more than $214.3 million worldwide. The earnings were enough to catch the eye of ABC Family, who decided to buy up the basic cable rights to the film.
ABC Family president Michael Riley said, "This tremendous opening weekend reinforces what we have already learned - a powerful heroine, themes of romance and iconic characters will keenly resonate with our Millennial audience". The deal with Lionsgate also includes the rights to the upcoming second film from the franchise.
The film will begin airing sometime in 2014.
