The Golden Globe Awards is set to introduce two new exciting categories for its upcoming January broadcast, marking a significant evolution in the recognition of outstanding achievements in the industry. It has been reported that these categories are designed to celebrate not only the creative excellence but also the global impact of films and stand-up comedy specials.
The first of these new categories is the "Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement." This category aims to recognize movies that have not only achieved critical acclaim but have also made a significant impact in terms of box office earnings or streaming views. Eligible nominees must have grossed a minimum of $150 million during their theatrical release, with at least $100 million of that coming from domestic box office revenue. Streaming films with equivalent viewership will also be considered, utilizing data from recognized industry sources. This addition to the awards roster opens the door for blockbuster hits to be acknowledged alongside their artistically exceptional counterparts.
The second newly introduced category is "Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television." This category seeks to honor the outstanding work of comedians in traditional stand-up formats, as well as those who have made a mark as breakout comedians within troupes or ensembles. Comedy specials broadcast on various platforms, including broadcast, basic and premium cable, streaming services, and pay-per-view cable, will be considered. To maintain the quality and legitimacy of this award, projects must have a recognized distributor, and individual social media accounts will not be eligible. These additions reflect the Golden Globe Awards' commitment to celebrating the diverse talents and contributions of the entertainment industry, from blockbusters to the laughter-inducing world of stand-up comedy.
Helen Hoehne, the President of the Golden Globe Awards, expressed her excitement, saying, "The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we're thrilled to honor their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year. Additionally, we are proud to recognize the hard work and innovation that goes into making a film that is both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional." Meanwhile, Tim Gray, the Golden Globes' Executive Vice President, added, that blockbuster movies "have typically not been recognized among industry awards, but they should be."
