Sony’s Bloodborne Movie Reveal Signals a Bold New Chapter for PlayStation Adaptations
Sony Pictures is expanding its growing slate of video game adaptations with an ambitious new project: an R-rated animated feature based on the acclaimed PlayStation title Bloodborne. The announcement was made during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation.
The reveal was among the biggest surprises from Sony’s opening night showcase, reinforcing how aggressively the studio is leaning into fan-favorite gaming franchises with strong built-in audiences.
The film is being developed by Sony Pictures in collaboration with PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation. Content creator Seán McLoughlin, widely known as Jacksepticeye, is attached as a producer, bringing firsthand experience with the game and its global fanbase. Lyrical Media, the parent company of Lyrical Animation, is co-financing the project.
Originally developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bloodborne is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time. The story centers on a lone traveler navigating a gothic, plague-ridden city filled with deranged inhabitants and horrifying creatures. Known for its punishing gameplay and richly layered lore, the game has built a devoted following since its release. While details of the film’s plot are being kept under wraps, the source material offers a deep well of narrative and visual inspiration.
McLoughlin’s involvement reinforces Sony’s effort to connect directly with gaming communities. With millions of followers and years spent playing Bloodborne, he brings both credibility and insight into what makes the game resonate with fans. His role could help ensure the adaptation remains faithful to its roots while appealing to a broader audience.
The project also reflects Sony’s continued success in translating its gaming franchises to the screen. Previous collaborations between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions include Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, as well as television hits like The Last of Us. Also in the works is Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa.
