The Top Chef contestant reflects on competition pressure, community pride, and giving back

As the Charlotte-based chef competing on Top Chef Season 23, Chef Brittany Cochran understood the pressure that came with representing her hometown on a national stage. While she did not advance as far as she had hoped, her time in the competition showcased both her culinary talent and her resilience.

In a conversation with FlickDirect, Chef Brittany reflected on the challenges of the Bravo series, the diversity of Charlotte’s food scene, and the charitable work that continues to define her beyond the kitchen.

At the start of the season, judge Tom Colicchio noted that he had previously dined at her restaurant. That recognition immediately raised expectations, highlighting her experience and putting her skills in the spotlight among the competition.

Like many contestants, Chef Brittany acknowledged that the pressure of the show led to decisions she would not normally make in her own restaurant. The fast-paced environment forces chefs to take risks, experiment with unfamiliar ideas, and deliver under intense scrutiny.

Reflecting on her journey, she said she was “ok with where I got in the competition,” emphasizing that being selected as one of 15 contestants from thousands of applicants was an achievement in itself.

“I wasn't the first one to go home, but I wasn't the winner. I was still one of 15 that got chosen out of thousands. That's something that no one can take away from me. I will always be a part of the Top Chef family, and I hope to be an inspiration to these young kids who are going through culinary school,” she explained.

Throughout her career, Chef Brittany has embraced a simple but powerful philosophy: “Stay hungry.” The phrase reflects her commitment to growth, perseverance, and helping others succeed.

She also highlighted how Top Chef Season 23 has showcased a strong group of women, challenging outdated perceptions in the culinary industry. “We were all strong females that know how to cook and go toe to toe with any guy,” she said, adding that the bonds formed during the competition continue beyond the show.

Outside of television, Chef Brittany is deeply committed to charitable work. She actively supports Cookies for Cancer, an organization she became involved with while working for Marc Forgione in New York City, as well as Meals on Wheels.

Her dedication to giving back reflects her broader values, where community involvement is just as important as success in the kitchen. These efforts often bring together fellow contestants, strengthening connections formed during the competition while making a meaningful impact.

As the only Charlotte-based chef in the competition, she experienced both challenges and rewards. While the isolation of filming was difficult, she appreciated the opportunity to highlight local businesses and showcase the region’s culinary diversity.

Describing the area, Chef Brittany emphasized Charlotte’s unique appeal, where diverse neighborhoods and cultures come together to create a vibrant food scene. She noted the strong support for local businesses, from restaurants to small producers.

“We are huge on supporting anything and everything local. From clothing brands to foods to honeys to spices, literally everything,” she said, referencing challenges like the hot pepper competition in nearby Fort Mill, South Carolina, which highlighted the region’s agricultural roots.

Ultimately, her experience on Top Chef Season 23 left a lasting impression. Beyond developing new skills, she gained lifelong friendships and a deeper understanding of herself as both a chef and a person.

“I learned a lot about myself and who I am as a person and what kind of chef I am,” she said.

Top Chef Season 23 airs Monday nights at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo, with episodes available to stream the following day on Peacock.
