The iconic underdog story returns to the big screen alongside a first look at I Play Rocky
Rocky is celebrating its 50th anniversary this November with a special theatrical event, Rocky 50, bringing the beloved film back to the big screen in a newly remastered 4K presentation.
Running from November 7 through November 11, the anniversary event is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Park Circus, and Fathom Entertainment. In addition to the remastered screening, audiences will get an exclusive early look at the upcoming biographical film I Play Rocky, along with a special introduction from its cast.
Originally released in 1976, Rocky stars Sylvester Stallone in one of the most defining roles in film history. The movie earned ten Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Picture. Its cultural impact has endured for decades, with the Library of Congress selecting it for preservation in the National Film Registry as a work that is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
The anniversary event also highlights the story behind the film’s creation. I Play Rocky, directed by Peter Farrelly, tells the true story of Stallone’s determination to write and star in the film, bringing Rocky Balboa to life against long odds. The film is scheduled for a nationwide release on November 20, with a limited theatrical rollout beginning November 13.
Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt emphasized the film’s lasting legacy, calling it “the ultimate inspirational sports movie masterpiece” and noting its enduring place in American cinematic history.
Rocky follows a small-time Philadelphia boxer who gets an unlikely shot at greatness when heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers, offers him a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The story’s themes of perseverance and determination continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
Tickets for Rocky 50 will go on sale later this fall through Fathom Entertainment and participating theaters. For longtime fans and new audiences alike, the limited engagement offers a rare opportunity to experience the film’s emotional impact in a theatrical setting.
