MasterChef Global Gauntlet Raises the Stakes as a Red Card Twist Changes the Competition

After surviving the first team challenge, MasterChef Global Gauntlet offers the home cooks grill redemption. For this backyard barbecue challenge, the teams face a “World Cup Cookoff,” but nothing is simple. In this exclusive clip, one team receives a red card that will impact who gets eliminated.

MasterChef fans know that the coveted immunity pin is more than just safety for one cook. The advantage earned can change a challenge. Home cooks who strategize well can help themselves and protect their team.

During last episode’s team challenge, Dave, as captain, earned the immunity pin and advantage. For the “World Cup Cookoff,” Dave can give a red card to one cook. Just like the red card in soccer, he benches one cook from this challenge.

As seen in this exclusive clip, everyone must stop, wait, and recover from Dave’s choice. Will he choose to take down a strong team? Will the decision help his team? Or, will he pick a home cook based on friendship?

“The immunity pin is more than just safety. The advantage earned can change a challenge.”

MasterChef Global Gauntlet has yet to determine a team front-runner. Team Africa and Team Asia have had wins. A few home cooks have consistently been at or near the bottom. Since there are so many cooks left in the competition, it is hard to predict which team or cook could make a real run for the title. Dave’s choice is more a shot in the dark than a true strategy decision.

While this competition twist makes for engaging television, this episode’s theme continues FOX’s promotion of the World Cup. Even though the Home Depot moment grilling moment pushes the product placement front and center, people will be hosting watch parties for all the World Cup action. If this challenge can inspire viewers to make some culturally relevant food, it succeeds in its purpose. MasterChef succeeds best when it encourages people to step up to the grill, stove, or oven and experiment with food and flavor.

Will the dreaded red card impact the World Cup Cookoff on MasterChef Global Gauntlet? Be sure to watch the new episode on Wednesday, June 3, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Episodes can be streamed the next day on Hulu.

MasterChef will pause for the World Cup on FOX. New episodes will return to FOX on July 15th.
