The James Cameron sci-fi classic returns to theaters this August in a restored 4K presentation timed to the franchise's iconic Judgment Day.
More than 35 years after redefining action cinema, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is heading back to theaters in a newly restored 4K presentation, RealD 3D, and other premium large-format formats. The limited engagement will run in U.S. theaters from August 28 through September 2, with international screenings taking place across late August and early September to coincide with the film's iconic "Judgment Day" date of August 29.
T2 was made for theatres, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version... is the absolute best way to see the film.
Originally released in 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day became a cultural phenomenon, earning four Academy Awards and setting a new standard for visual effects and action filmmaking. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, and Robert Patrick, the film remains one of the highest-grossing and most influential movies ever made, with a 90% critics score and 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The anniversary screenings will utilize STUDIOCANAL's acclaimed 2017 4K restoration and 3D conversion. In the United States, the release is being presented through a partnership between Fathom Entertainment and Rialto Pictures, with STUDIOCANAL handling worldwide distribution.
“T2 was made for theatres, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film,” said director James Cameron. “I believe it's safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence! And maybe that's a message of hope we all could use this summer.”
STUDIOCANAL CEO Anna Marsh said the anniversary release reflects the company's continued commitment to restoring classic films and bringing them back to theaters worldwide.
Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt called Terminator 2 a timeless action classic, saying the anniversary release offers longtime fans and first-time audiences the opportunity to experience the film the way it was meant to be seen.
Alongside the announcement, STUDIOCANAL, Fathom Entertainment, and Rialto Pictures unveiled a new 35th-anniversary trailer and a commemorative poster celebrating the film's return.
International screenings begin August 27 in Germany, Latin America, and the Czech Republic before the film opens in the United States, Italy, and Poland on August 28. Additional territories will follow through early September, with France, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, and the United Kingdom all participating in the anniversary rollout.
Tickets for the U.S. theatrical engagement go on sale July 17 through participating theater box offices and Fathom Entertainment.
Directed by James Cameron, Terminator 2: Judgment Day follows young John Connor, humanity's future leader, as he becomes the target of the deadly shape-shifting T-1000. Sent back to protect him is a reprogrammed Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, forcing Sarah Connor to once again fight to prevent the rise of the machines and stop Judgment Day before it begins.
