MasterChef Returns with a Chocolate Mystery Box That Will Send Two Home
After being on hiatus during FOX’s World Cup coverage, MasterChef Global Gauntlet returns on Wednesday, July 15. The new episode requires the cooks to tackle an ingredient that stumps even the most talented culinarians. Can you guess this Mystery Box ingredient?
MasterChef fans love the Mystery Box challenges. Earlier this season, the cooks whipped up creative takes on Eggs Benedict. While some cooks dazzled with flavorful twists on the classic hollandaise, others broke under the pressure.
As any fan of the FOX culinary competition appreciates, these required challenges separate the talented, knowledgeable, and experienced cooks from those who only know how to create a visually enticing dish. Understanding ingredients and how to manipulate them is key to success on MasterChef.
FOX graciously gave FlickDirect an exclusive clip for MasterChef Season 16 episode 9. In this clip, the cooks learn their fate. This “Bitter Sweet Mystery Box” will have some people crumbling under the pressure.

The required ingredient is chocolate. The cooks have a bounty of chocolate ingredients to use. Understanding not just the flavors but also how the chocolate reacts in recipes is key to executing their idea.
Specifically, the cooks must create “chocolate confections inspired by their heritage.” Since this season celebrates global culinary stories, that connection to their heritage is key. Not only does the dish need to be executed well, but it also needs to tell a story. For example, cardamom in an Indian dessert makes sense, but a chipotle-infused chocolate tart does exemplify that region.
At the end of this Mystery Box challenge, two cooks will be eliminated. Even in these early rounds, there is no room for error. From proper technique to smart plating choices, the judges will be closely watching every detail.
While the competition is still in its early stages, a few home cooks have emerged as early favorites. Aishu has previously won immunity and impressed with the South Indian dish Aloo Bonda. In this chocolate challenge, she has an opportunity to showcase some Indian inspiration. For example, she could attempt a chocolate version of Kalakand, a cheese fudge.
Another top contender is Heidi from South Africa. Her diverse culinary knowledge earned her immunity and several top-place finishes. It seems likely that Heidi knows how to temper chocolate and create a perfect glaze. Her dessert should be a big wow moment.
On the other hand, cooks who get easily flustered and do not stay on task could face baking disasters. Foo, Jake, or even Maria might be on the chopping block. If they cannot execute their vision, they will hear criticism from the judges.
Which two cooks will see their culinary dreams melt away? Be sure to watch the new episode of MasterChef Global Gauntlet on FOX, Wednesday, July 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Episodes can be streamed the next day on Hulu.
