One movie. Six guesses. Guess The Gross puts your memory of movie box office numbers to the test.
Most movie fans can tell you whether a film was a hit or a flop. Ask them how much it actually made, though, and that answer usually gets a little harder.
FlickDirect is putting that knowledge to the test with Guess The Gross - Movie Game, a free daily game built around one simple question: How much did this movie make worldwide?
Players get one movie each day and six chances to find the correct worldwide box office total.
You make a guess, see the clues, and adjust from there. Green means a digit is exactly right. Orange means it is within two of the correct number. Gray means you're off. Sometimes the first guess gets you close. Sometimes it becomes obvious very quickly that you remembered the movie's box office completely wrong.
That's where most of the fun starts.
Finishing the puzzle is one thing. Doing it in fewer tries than your friends is another. Your score is based on how many guesses it took, and results can be shared without giving away the answer.
Because everyone gets the same movie each day, friends can compare scores even if they play hours apart. There is no need to schedule a match or have everyone online at once.
The game also keeps track of streaks, guess distribution, and previous results. If you miss a day, an archive lets you go back and play earlier movies.
The idea came from something FlickDirect has been doing for years anyway: talking about movies, following their box office, and arguing over which films were bigger successes than people remember.
People remember that a movie was huge or that it bombed, but the actual number is where everybody starts guessing," said Nathan Rose, CEO of FlickDirect. "I thought that was a game right there. Give everybody the same movie, give them six tries, and then let them compare how badly they remembered the box office.
Some movies are easier than they look. Others are the opposite. A film you remember being everywhere may have made far less worldwide than expected, while another may have quietly earned hundreds of millions of dollars.
That difference between what you remember and what actually happened is what makes each day's movie interesting.
There is no account required to start playing, so players can open the game and go straight into the day's challenge.
