Bautista Replaces Ryan Hurst After an Injury Forced Prime Video and Sony to Recast the Lead Role
It has been announced that Dave Bautista is officially stepping into the role of Kratos in the upcoming God of War series for Prime Video. He will be replacing Ryan Hurst, who was forced to exit the production due to an injury.
Hurst, who was announced as Kratos in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep while filming and required surgery. The injury would have pushed production delays into 2027, prompting Amazon and Sony to recast the central role. Bautista was previously reported to be in talks for the part earlier this month, and he is now officially set to wield the Blades of Chaos as the Ghost of Sparta.

Beyond Bautista's established acting career, the former professional wrestler already possesses the imposing physical presence associated with Kratos. The character has long been depicted as an exceptionally muscular warrior, meaning Bautista can step into the physical demands of the part without requiring an extensive transformation period.
Prime Video has ordered two seasons of God of War, with the installments expected to film back-to-back. Production initially began in Vancouver in February, and filming is now expected to resume in the coming weeks with Bautista in place. Four episodes had already been completed with Hurst as Kratos, meaning extensive reshoots will be required with Bautista taking over the role.
The series will draw its story from the two most recent God of War games, following Kratos as he attempts to raise his young son, Atreus, while confronting the gods and creatures of Norse mythology.
Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus. The supporting cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
The series comes from Ronald D. Moore, who serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes. Maril Davis of Tall Ship Productions also executive produces alongside Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers.
God of War is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
