Sony Pictures will bring Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Part One to international theaters on November 6, 2026, launching an ambitious two-part epic created for audiences around the world.
The story of Ramayana has been around for centuries and tells the story of exiled prince Rama and his wife, Sita, who the demon king, Ravana, has kidnaped. It has been adapted into a movie more than once in the past, but this year, filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari is bringing the epic tale to the big screen with help from Prime Focus founder Namit Malhotra. Starring Bollywood's biggest stars, Ranbir Kapoor, Yash (who is also producing), and Sai Pallavi, Sony Pictures announced that Ramayana: Part One will be released internationally on November 6, 2026.
Malhotra, who also founded DNEG, the visual effects company behind Denis Villeneuve's Dune and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Interstellar, and Tenet, stated, “For generations, the Ramayana has inspired people through its timeless humanity and enduring values. Our ambition has always been to honor that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere.” The film will be released in multiple languages, including English, in an effort to appeal to mass audiences worldwide.
The drama promises to showcase incredible visual effects married with mythological weaponry and massive battles as Rama tries to defeat Ravana across three different worlds and rescue Sita, thus bringing on the era of Rama.
While Hans Zimmer teams with A.R. Rahman to give audiences a score worthy of such an epic film, action sequences are choreographed by Terry Notary and Guy Norris, and Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal oversee the production design.
The international release of Part One on November 6 arrives just ahead of Diwali, with the film targeting a November 8 release in India to coincide with the Hindu festival. Diwali commemorates Rama's return to his kingdom, Ayodhya, after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana. Lamps lit during the festival symbolize the illumination of Ayodhya on the night when the prince finally came home.
Having witnessed some footage in 3D firsthand during a CinemaCon presentation back in April of this year, I can tell you the movie is going to be breathtaking and should only be viewed in premium formats like IMAX. The details and colors are among the best I have ever seen and will leave audiences speechless, making the film's arrival even more highly anticipated.
Ramayana is planned as a two-part movie event, with Part Two to be released during Diwali 2027.
