A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Brings Heart Back to Westeros 4K Review

3 MIN READ
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings warmth, humor, and terrific casting to a lighter but still compelling return to Westeros.

HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms delivers a lighter, character-driven return to Westeros, led by strong casting, sharp production values, and a terrific 4K presentation.

Fifteen years ago, HBO debuted the television series Game of Thrones based on author George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. For eight seasons, fans tuned in to watch the worlds of Westeros and Essos and the drama of the noble families.

In 2022, a Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, premiered on the streaming service and, like its predecessor, became a hit. The series is expected to have four seasons with a new one premiering once every two years, including this year's third season, which premieres on June 21, 2026.

This past January, a second Game of Thrones spin-off, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, debuted on HBO. Starring Peter Claffey (Small Things Like These) and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), the show earned critical acclaim and has already been renewed. This week, Warner Bros. has released the complete first season on 4K.

For those who haven't yet seen the show, here is a synopsis:

A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wander Westeros. In an adaptation of George R.R. Martin's novella The Hedge Knight, a young and naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, face a series of dangerous exploits. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and images of the last dragon have not yet passed from living memory, great destinies and powerful foes await these improbable and incomparable friends.

Just like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings the drama but also offers some funny and light-hearted moments that the original series doesn't. The cast is excellent as each actor seems perfectly chosen for their role. It is rare when there are few to no missteps in casting or scripts, but this series seems to have managed that so far.

The two-disc set is presented in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio, allowing for the best technical aspects available. The video presentation is outstanding with true colors that are deep and rich, and the audio track is robust and full, giving the viewer an incredible experience when watching Season One.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Complete First Season offers almost two hours of extras, including Inside the Episode featurettes for all six episodes. Additionally, the two discs include various behind-the-scenes featurettes and fun videos, including Building A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Welcome to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (Extended), the six-part A Knight in the Making web series, character pieces for Dunk and Egg, a blooper reel, and an Ashford Meadow set tour with Dexter Sol Ansell. The extras give some insight into the show, the cast, the production values, etc., and really showcase some of what sets this series apart from other shows.

Obviously, George R.R. Martin and HBO are doing something right for them to have created three successful series that offer audiences something different while remaining within the same universe. The production values for all the shows are incredible, which allows for the 4K releases to be some of the best around. Video and audio aspects are remarkable, which makes the 4K release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms a must-own physical media release for any Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, or George R.R. Martin fans.

Out in stores now, you should pick one up before they are all gone.
