Director Jon M. Chu is set to venture into Broadway with his directorial debut in a stage adaptation of his 2018 blockbuster hit "Crazy Rich Asians," as producers revealed today. The upcoming musical, currently in the development phase, will boast a creative team featuring Leah Nanako Winkler as the book writer, Helen Park as the composer, and Amanda Green & Tat Tong as the lyricists.
Chu, renowned for his work on the big screen, has previously helmed the film adaptation of the Broadway sensation "In The Heights." The decision to bring "Crazy Rich Asians" to the Broadway stage underscores a trend of popular films finding new life in the theater realm.
Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, along with Kevin Kwan, made the announcement today, describing the musical as a contemporary romantic comedy inspired by Kwan's bestselling book trilogy and Chu's film. Further details regarding a pre-Broadway engagement will be disclosed soon. With a stellar creative team behind the project, including Winkler's acclaimed playwriting credits, Park's Broadway experience, and Green & Tong's musical prowess, anticipation is high for this adaptation to hit the stage.
