MasterChef’s Wheel of Fusion Challenge Pushes Cooks to Blend Cultures, Creativity, and Technique
The new MasterChef: Global Gauntlet season celebrates the cooks’ culinary heritage. In this week’s episode, the fusion theme requires everyone to showcase their food knowledge and creativity. Does the wheel of fusion bring good fortune?
In the recent Mystery Box challenge, a few unexpected cooks rose to the occasion. Julia, Team Europe, turned a chocolate baking misstep into a huge victory. Her win earned her immunity and her team safety.
For this episode, “Wheel of Fusion,” the cooks must pair their region with another one. Whether it is Asian French, African Latin, or a more specific country pairing, the concept is to showcase food and flavor connections.
In this exclusive clip that FOX provided to FlickDirect, Gordon Ramsay checks in with Team Europe’s Basia. Her enthusiasm over the unusual Polish and Japanese crossover has everyone raising a festive toast.
The fusion challenge rewards cooks who understand both flavor and storytelling.
While no one expected Gordon to enjoy sake with Basia, cooks do need to taste all the ingredients in a dish. For example, if you would not drink a particular wine with the meal, you should not cook with it.
The lighthearted moment with Gordon and Basia captures what makes MasterChef engaging television. The judges do offer tough criticism on poorly executed dishes. At the same time, this food television experience is meant to combine learning with competition. If the cooks cannot celebrate the fun moments, the show does not work.
Looking back at the clip, Basia’s dish sounds complicated. While miso-glazed cod is a classic dish, beets and parsnip puree is unusual. Hopefully, the combined ingredients do not create a pink puddle at the bottom of the plate. That colorful component would not be well received by the judges. Could there be a reference to Pepto-Bismol?
Additionally, a yuzu beurre blanc sounds intriguing. The classic mother sauce paired with seafood usually features wine. Swapping sake for wine can change the flavor profile significantly.
That sake tasting moment with Gordon is important to her dish. If Basia did not taste the sake, she could make a big mistake. Just like chardonnay tastes very different from sauvignon blanc, every sake has a different rice wine profile. This dish could be very unbalanced if Basia does not consider sake’s floral, fruity, or even spicy qualities.
As one of two Team Europe members competing in this global fusion challenge, Basia cannot afford a flavor misstep. Basia will either be the top dish or up for elimination. That sake toast might be her last happy moment in the MasterChef kitchen.
Which team will have good fortune from the wheel of fusion? MasterChef: Global Gauntlet airs Wednesday, July 22 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX. Episodes can be streamed the next day on Hulu.
