Takashi Yamazaki's highly anticipated sequel will make its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival before opening in theaters this November.
The King of the Monsters is returning to the big screen. Director Takashi Yamazaki's highly anticipated Godzilla Minus Zero will make its world premiere as this year's Spotlight Gala presentation during the 64th New York Film Festival.
The sequel to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One will debut at Alice Tully Hall on September 26, with Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew expected to attend the special event.
Following the success of Godzilla Minus One, which earned more than $116 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, expectations are high for the next installment in the franchise. Yamazaki made history at the 2024 Academy Awards, becoming the first director since Stanley Kubrick to receive the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
The premiere continues the remarkable resurgence of Toho's iconic monster, whose recent Japanese films have earned worldwide critical acclaim while introducing a new generation of audiences to Godzilla's postwar origins.
Set in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film, Godzilla Minus Zero follows the Shikishima family as they confront another terrifying crisis that promises to raise the stakes even higher. The film opens in Japan on November 3 before arriving in North American theaters on November 6.
Yamazaki expressed his excitement about unveiling the sequel on an international stage, saying, "It is truly an honor to introduce our film to a global audience for the first time in a place of such history and prestige. I am filled with both awe and excitement to see how far the power of Japan's Godzilla can terrify audiences around the world, and whether they will resonate with what lies beyond that fear."
The original Godzilla Minus One, released in North America by GKIDS, revitalized the iconic franchise by returning to its postwar origins while delivering spectacular visual effects on a relatively modest budget. The film became both a critical and commercial success, ranking as one of the highest-grossing foreign-language releases in North American box office history.
"More than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there's life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror," said New York Film Festival Artistic Director Dennis Lim. "Like its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year's NYFF Spotlight Gala."
Following its festival debut, Godzilla Minus Zero will open in North American theaters on November 6, giving audiences another opportunity to experience Yamazaki's acclaimed vision of cinema's most famous kaiju.
The 64th New York Film Festival runs from September 25 through October 12.
