Widow's Bay broke the comedy record with 14 Emmy wins, while The Pitt repeated as Outstanding Drama Series during a night filled with history, reunions, and emotional tributes.
The 78th Emmy Awards took place Monday night in Los Angeles, bringing together some of television's biggest stars to celebrate another year of outstanding shows and performances. Hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the ceremony saw Widow's Bay dominate the comedy categories while The Pitt took home Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive year.
Widow's Bay emerged as the year's biggest winner with 14 Emmys across the Primetime and Creative Arts ceremonies, setting a new record for the most awards won by a comedy series in a single year. During Monday's telecast, the Apple TV series won Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor for Matthew Rhys, Supporting Actress for Kate O'Flynn, Supporting Actor for Stephen Root, directing for Hiro Murai and writing for Katie Dippold.
Rhys also made Emmy history with wins in two different genres. In addition to taking home Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay, he won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me.
The Pitt continued its own impressive run, winning Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row. Noah Wyle also repeated as Lead Actor in a Drama Series, while Rhea Seehorn won Lead Actress for Pluribus, Allison Janney took Supporting Actress for The Diplomat, and Tom Pelphrey won Supporting Actor for Task.
Jean Smart added another Emmy to her collection for Hacks, while Sally Field won for Remarkably Bright Creatures. Smart and Janney each reached eight performance Emmy wins, placing them alongside Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus among television's most honored performers.
One of the night's biggest nostalgic moments came when Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited onstage to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The former co-stars joked about the complicated romance between Buffy and Angel before Boreanaz admitted he always thought the pair would end up together.
Gellar quickly responded, "Well, I guess we won't find out," a pointed reference to Hulu's decision earlier this year not to move forward with the planned Buffy revival.
The reunion also took a more emotional turn as Gellar acknowledged what she described as a difficult two years for the show's cast and crew. Several members of the Buffy family have died in recent years, including Michelle Trachtenberg, Nicholas Brendon and Anthony Stewart Head.
The evening included several other emotional moments. Michael J. Fox received a standing ovation as he accepted the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, recognizing his decades of work supporting Parkinson's disease research through The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
The ceremony also remembered Dolly Parton, who died in August at the age of 80. Sally Field helped introduce the tribute to her former Steel Magnolias co-star before Reba McEntire performed in Parton's honor.
Other major winners included DTF St. Louis for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Remarkably Bright Creatures for Television Movie, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for Variety Series, and The Traitors for Reality Competition Program.
