Video Duration: 4:16
ALLISON: Hi, I´m Allison Hazlett and I´m talking with Kate Beckinsale about Underworld: Blood Wars. Hi. How are you?
KATE: Good how are you?
ALLISON: I´m good. I think it´s an appropriate title, it was extremely bloody.
KATE: It´s quite bloody. They were not lying.
ALLISON: Yeah, no. I feel like it was bloodier than the past ones, was that purposefully or do you feel like it just worked for this particular movie?
KATE: I myself am not in charge of the amount of blood per movie, obviously I encourage it, but it´s not my decision. I think the point is, is that obviously we´ve established in a lot of the movies so far that blood is rather a precious commodity depending on whose it is, so there is a fair bit of it flung about in this movie.
ALLISON: Why is Celine such a great character so appealing to people?
KATE: I think the thing is one: it´s just fun to see a woman doing that stuff, I think that´s been the case from the get go. But also I think she has a very kind of tortured inner life and she´s always coming from a place of love; she´s always you know, defending somebody she loves, protecting someone she loves, avenges someone she loves – it´s never – she´s not just kind of there for the violence, you know, she´s always kind of tortured in some way so, you know, she´s kind of this rather plagued heroine.
ALLISON: And this time around I feel like she was more emotionally vulnerable than she has been in the past. How is that for you?
KATE: Yeah. I think it was good, I think it was important because I think the stakes are higher in this movie. This is essentially a movie about a mother searching for her daughter, you know and there´s nobody more likely to kick your ass than a mom. (laughing) You know. So it did, it felt right that she was you know, more obviously emotional in this one.
KATE: Anna Forestor, new director to this franchise. Tell me about working with her.
ALLISON: I mean it was great. I mean it definitely feels appropriate, given that we´re in our fifth incarnation to have a female director finally. I think that was a really good choice. And I think she came as very much a fan of the movies wanting to preserve obviously certain things that she held very dear about them but also wanting to sort of shake it up a little tiny bit and, you know expand the world a little bit and I think she really achieved that. It was a real pleasure.
ALLISON: Yeah I think she did a terrific job with this
KATE: Thanks, me too.
ALLISON: The fight sequence. This franchise is known for having great fight sequences. And this time around I really think they did a phenomenal job. How intricate was that for you? How much training did you have to go through for that?
KATE: I mean I´ve never done as much training as I did on the first movie because I was such a novice and really had never thrown a punch, even really run around much. So and it was never quite as intense as that but the fights are obviously much larger scale, and longer, and more complicated, and so there´s you know, there´s definitely the training period at the beginning and then furtive practicing in parking lots, you know, throughout the movie.
ALLISON: And tell me about working with Theo James again this time around.
KATE: It´s lovely and one of the nice things about Underworld is that there are those familiar faces whether it´s a stunt coordinator, or another actor, that you know, that pops up from one or two or three movies ago and then you get your kind of influx of new blood too, which is Tobias and Lauren, Clementine, you know new people. So having Theo, you know Theo´s obviously incredibly unattractive so it´s hard for us to look him full in the face, because he´s so ugly. But it´s nice because we´ve done a couple of these together. I always think it´s unfair that he gets to wear relatively normal clothes compared to everybody else. I´ll suddenly realize half-way through the movie like, ´You´re in pants and a sweater. How´d you get away with that? Charles dances in a skirt, I´m in this. I mean so how did you swing it?´ So he´s obviously sleeping with someone quite important, I think.
ALLISON: We were actually talking earlier to how you do those stunts in that really tight outfit.
KATE: I know, it does make things more difficult. There was one where I had to kind of flip up from lying down, which, you know, requires you to have fairly decent abs. You know, probably could manage it but with a corset on you´re just – you´re sort of immobilized. And I´d see you know Bradley James looking at me like this. ´You try it, mate! You try it in this!´ It makes things harder. Plus the costume will split in the crotch if you jump too hard, so…
ALLISON: Oh (laughing).
KATE: I need to have some doubles. (laughing)
ALLISON: Well, we´re certainly looking forward to seeing it on January 6th.
KATE: Thank you. Thank you, so much.
