A visually immersive concert experience that blends music, technology, and intimacy in a bold new way

Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) delivers a unique and visually ambitious concert film experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell was born almost a quarter of a century ago, and for the last decade, she has been a staple in the world of music. At the age of 16, she released her debut EP, Don't Smile at Me, and two years later her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Hit number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK album charts. She has won 10 Grammy Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards, 2 Oscars, and a host of other awards, having been nominated 180 times. This week, she will venture into the world of live concert movies with Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).

Yes, you read that right, Live in 3D. How, may you ask, does she manage to do that? Well, the answer is, much like Eilish herself, complicated. First, one needs to hire a director well-versed in 3D filmmaking and innovation. For Eilish, that meant looking no further than legendary director James Cameron (the Avatar trilogy). Second, one needs the technology to film a live concert in 3D and deliver it as such to audiences worldwide. Of course, the technology didn't exactly exist, but leave it to Cameron to adapt what is already available and utilize it for a live concert scenario. The result: simply put...extraordinary.

Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is the third concert film released by Eilish, but the first presented in 3D. It was filmed on the seventh stop of her World tour in July of 2025 in Manchester, England. At the show, she announced the concert was being filmed for a secret 3D project, and four months later, in November, it was revealed that the footage was being used to document the tour and would be released as a concert movie.

The film was produced by Darkroom Records, Interscope Films, and Lightstorm Entertainment. The production utilized virtual reality 3D technology, via a partnership with Meta Platforms and Cameron's Lightstorm Vision, for a release on Meta Quest headsets.

Throughout the film, Eilish and Cameron utilize various cameras and discuss the placement of the specially fitted cameras as well as what shots they were trying to achieve. They talked extensively about what might look good on camera and how to bring the audience up close and personal, making the concert movie-going experience more intimate and individualized.

As for the concert itself, Eilish used a minimal stage approach without props or dancers and only a few pyrotechnics. Center stage was a box that played various images, but which would turn transparent at certain points during the concert. The box contained a platform that could move in sync or independently of the surrounding walls. The only other people on stage with her were her band and backup singer, all of whom were dressed like prep school students in short-sleeved collared polo shirts and Dockers-style pants or skirts.

In contrast, the audience seemed to be made up of devoted Eilish fans who all seemed to fit into the "outcast" category of high school students. They either wear "unique" outfits that wouldn't be considered high fashion, have interesting facial piercings, identify as part of the LGBTQ community, and/or just feel, much like Eilish herself, as if they aren't a part of the "cool kids" crowd. Perusing the faces, one would be hard-pressed to find a prom king or queen among the attendees. However, many of them idolize Eilish and can sing along with every word of every song.

As for Eilish, she has a beautiful and unique voice, both physically and metaphorically, and is a songwriter with something to say. Through her music, she "speaks" to her fans and for them, and they adore her for it. She is incredibly talented, and a 3D concert movie fits her like a glove.

The experience is the latest in concert films and offers a unique and very cool perspective. Her fans will certainly love it, but for those of us who only know her most popular songs, the movie is still enjoyable, fun, and like nothing you've ever seen before.
