Michelle Yeoh, fresh off her Oscar win for "Everything Everywhere All at Once," has secured her next leading role in "Blade Runner 2099," a limited series set to stream on Prime Video. This installment serves as a follow-up to the 2017 film sequel "Blade Runner 2049."
Silka Luisa takes the helm as showrunner, joining a lineup of executive producers that includes Ridley Scott, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan van Tulleken directs the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer, with Steven Johnson as co-executive producer. Production is handled by Film United in Prague.
While specific details about Yeoh's character and the series' plot remain shrouded in secrecy, this project marks another milestone in the ongoing expansion of the sci-fi franchise inspired by Philip K. Dick's iconic novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Originally slated to film in Belfast, production shifted to Prague due to a significant delay caused by the challenges of 2023.
Yeoh, known for her iconic roles in 1990s Hong Kong action cinema and recent appearances in acclaimed projects like "The Brothers Sun," "The Witcher: Blood Origins," and "A Haunting in Venice," made history as the first Asian descent Best Actress Oscar winner. Beyond "Blade Runner 2099," her upcoming slate includes Jon M. Chu's "Wicked," Alex Kurtzman's "Star Trek: Section 31," and the highly anticipated "Avatar" sequels from James Cameron.
