Luke Greenfield Talks Comedy, Action & Playdate — Interview
Allison Rose sits down with director Luke Greenfield to talk about crafting the action-comedy Playdate, blending big laughs with real emotion, and why he’s drawn to stories about ordinary people thrown into insane situations. He breaks down working with Kevin James and Alan Ritchson, the bromance at the heart of the film, and how Isla Fisher’s “Mama Mafia” became an unexpected fan-favorite.
Playdate follows recently unemployed accountant Brian (Kevin James), who joins fellow stay-at-home dad Jeff (Alan Ritchson) for what should be a simple playdate with their sons—until mercenaries turn the afternoon into a chaotic, high-stakes scramble to survive. Directed by Luke Greenfield and written by Neil Goldman, the film leans into found-family warmth, over-the-top set pieces, and a throwback action-comedy vibe as Brian and Jeff fumble their way through one absurd obstacle after another.
ABOUT PLAYDATE
Brian Jennings (Kevin James) is a recently unemployed accountant-turned stay-at-home dad whose attempts at normal parenting fall apart when he accepts a seemingly innocent playdate invitation from charismatic dad Jeff Eamon (Alan Ritchson). What starts as mild banter and minivan carpooling turns into chaos when a band of mercenaries invades the suburban event, forcing both fathers and their sons into a wild survival scramble across city streets.
As Jeff's unexpected combat skills surface and Brian's world goes from chaotic to dangerous, the pair must navigate friendships, fatherhood, and mayhem in ways neither expected. Playdate blends action-movie intensity with suburban-life absurdity, turning a simple afternoon social into an adrenaline-fueled ride.
