Big Hero 6 (2014) Theatrical Review

By Nov 07, 2014 09:43 AM EST

Without a doubt, Big Hero 6 is going to be the runaway film this holiday season. It is cleaver, cute, has the magic of Marvel in its story, and Baymax is just irresistible. Here’s to hoping that a sequel is made to this amazing film.

Disney just unleashed another Marvel project on the silver screen without most movie patrons even realizing it. That film is known as Big Hero 6. Yes, that film, the one with the cute Stay Puft Marshmallow Man figure known as Baymax.

Big Hero 6's story centers around a boy genius, Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter), who has been on the wrong side of the tracks since his parents have passed.  To pass time, he attends "bot fights" and swindles other fighters for money with his "fight bot". Hiro's brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) tries to change the path Hiro is headed down by introducing him to his lab, San Fransokyo Tech, and all the cool inventions that he and his friends are creating.  Tadashi's invention just happens to be an inflatable robot built to serve as a healthcare companion called Baymax. Together with his friends, Tadashi convince Hiro to design a tech that will gain him admission into San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.

As with most movies, you need a certain catalyst to drive the plot along and unfortunately this time around it happens with the passing of Tadashi. Hiro's world comes crashing down around him until he accidently awakens Baymax from his slumber. Together they find evidence that Hiro's technology, that they thought was destroyed, is being used to perpetuate evil in San Fransokyo.  Hiro decides that his destiny is for him and Baymax, along with the help of Tadashi's friends, to create a superhero team, Big Hero 6. Together, they will track down the masked villain, and find answers about what happened to his brother.

Unlike Disney Animation's last film, Frozen, Big Hero 6 starts out with action and doesn't let up.  It's a very fast passed movie only slowing down for those moments it needs to for character development. The characters are fleshed out very well, and the dialog has a very sharp wit to it. The city of San Fransokyo is fully realized and looks amazing. It is brightly lit with various colors and extremely detailed. I dare say the background animation in this film is some of the best even seen in a cg-animated film. Fans who worried about characters unnaturally breaking out into song (i.e. Frozen) will be happy to know the only song played in the movie is during a montage. I do have to warn you, however, that the song is quite catchy (and much better than "Let it Go")

As far as Baymax goes, he is as funny and cute as all the commercials that are bombarding media outlets make him out to be. His mannerisms are very lovable and, just as Pixar did with Wall-E, the film makes you think of Baymax as a living being and not just a robot. By the end of the film you will want a Baymax for yourself, which I am sure Disney will be happy to sell to you just in time for the holidays.

P.S. Just in case you walked out of the theater humming the Fall Out Boy "Immortals" song like I did, here is the link to the song, http://flck.it/baymax.  Also, be sure to not walk out of the theater as soon as the film ends. As with all Marvel films, there is an extra scene in the credits.
