It's been announced that Jon Favreau will write and produce an animation/live-action hybrid Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series for Disney+.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is a classic cartoon character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 for Universal Pictures. As one of the first animated characters with personality, he gained popularity but was lost to Universal in a contract dispute in 1928, prompting Disney to create Mickey Mouse. Oswald continued under Universal, but in 2006, Disney regained the rights. Since then, he has appeared in video games like Epic Mickey, merchandise, and theme parks, remaining a beloved symbol of early animation with his mischievous charm and iconic long ears.
Jon Favreau has played a crucial role in shaping Disney's biggest franchises, from Marvel to Star Wars and live-action remakes. He kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by directing Iron Man (2008) and Iron Man 2 (2010) while also portraying Happy Hogan, a role he continued in The Avengers, the Spider-Man trilogy, and Avengers: Endgame. His work extended to Disney's live-action adaptations, directing The Jungle Book (2016), which won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and The Lion King (2019), a groundbreaking photorealistic CGI remake.
In the Star Wars universe, Favreau revitalized the franchise on television by creating, writing, and executive-producing The Mandalorian (2019- present), a massive success on Disney+. He continued expanding the universe with The Book of Boba Fett (2021-2022) and served as an executive producer on Ahsoka (2023) and the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. His visionary approach to storytelling and innovative use of technology have made him one of Disney's most influential creators, bridging nostalgia with cutting-edge filmmaking.
